Small Groups
Small groups are the heartbeat of the ministry, which occur in safe spaces where support and accountability become crucial to building relationships.
A small group, Love Card outline, is available for facilitators, inviting participants to be authentic about their victories and struggles. Small groups take place throughout Michigan. Don’t hesitate to contact us to find a small group in your area.
Small groups are the heartbeat of our ministry. Here, we get real, no holds barred. Our group from East Metro Detroit has been building trust since the Winter of 2019
We believe isolation stagnates growth in the Lord. People need encouragement, support, and accountability in their walk with Jesus Christ. Whenever possible, with a parole officer’s approval, it is imperative for returning citizens to find a small accountability group as soon as possible before old habits, haunts, or isolation sets in. Of all the facets of our ministry, we believe that being a part of a small group is one of our most significant deterrents against recidivism.
L-O-V-E Card structure
An optional L-O-V-E Card structure outlines a way for participants to share, led by willing facilitators through a 4-point acronym for L-O-V-E. Though this is not a hard and fast rule, we believe that continuity for how grouping occurs throughout the State of Michigan and beyond is essential. The four-point structured L-O-V-E card prompts sharing as follows:
L– Life as a devoted follower of Christ
O-Outstanding moments with God, Scripture, or people
V-Voice for sharing love in action
E– Essential confessions and prayer requests
L-“Life as a devoted follower of Christ” participants can be accountable for their faith walk since the last small group meeting or how their discipleship with Christ has been shared with others.
O-“Outstanding moments with God, scripture, or people” opens opportunities to share specific victories, learnings, and encouraging moments where God is given the glory for all his provisions.
V-“Voice for sharing love in action” is another accountability step where participants share how they plan to put their faith into action during the next week, giving voice to taking action for truly loving a specific person, group, or even culture.
E-“Essential confessions and prayer requests” offer participants a chance to be authentic about their struggles and what progress can be celebrated, as the group is prayerfully supportive during and after the group.
The back of the card reads, “Let’s keep it spiritual, and “What is said here, stays here.”
Most small groups run for an hour to an hour and a half. Some small groups include a meal. We try to limit the number of small groups to 6-8 people. If attendance in a group consistently reaches 8-10 people, we encourage groups to split to form new groups.
Our small groups are expanding throughout the State. This newly formed group is from Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Friends from Midland and Metro Detroit help our Lansing friends establish a small group in the Spring of 2022
Building trust and vulnerability are crucial in every small group and are more likely to occur with familiar participants. The Biblical mandate for Christians to be authentic, honest, and trustworthy with each other is evident. 1 Thessalonians 5:11, Ephesians 4:25, 1 Peter 5:5, Proverbs 11:13, Hebrews 10:25, and Proverbs 27: 17.
Group facilitators rotate to help keep the group on task. As facilitators lead, they model how to listen, listen, love, love as borrowed and modeled by the leaders in Keryx Prison Ministries.
